Online Conference IWRA 2020

The IWRA (Inter national Water Resources Association) organized a free and online conference entitled “Addressing Groundwater Resilience under Climate Change” on October 28-29-30 2020.

“Currently, climate change has become an undeniable major pressure on the world’s freshwater resources. Yet, the effects of climate change on groundwater, the most significant freshwater resource on Earth, are still poorly understood.”

The conference offered a special opportunity to share research results about the effects of climate change on natural groundwater resources, groundwater pollution and remediation, the available technology for that, and highlighted the importance of governance, management, policy and education as well. Among others, Managed Aquifer Recharge and its role in climate change adaptation was introduced, which is one of the main topics of ENeRAG. After the presentations, questions and answers could be discussed which promoted scientific knowledge exchange and gave new ideas to the participants to improve their research.

IWRA’s Online Conference addressed the above mentioned challenges and priorities in order to manage groundwater resources sustainably under climate change. The conference’s main goal was to, ultimately, promote the sharing and exchange of state-of-the-art scientific and policy knowledge on the links between an increased resilience of groundwater resources and climate change for the sustainable governance, use and management of these resources in all regions of the world.

At the conference ENeRAG project was represented by Timea Trásy-Havril (early career researcher), Zsóka Szabó (PhD student) and Sikandar Hayat (MSc student) from ELTE.

The researchers kept presentations about their researches:

  • Timea Trásy-Havril: poster presentation – "How might groundwater flow systems be modified by climate change?"
  • Zsóka Szabó: oral presentation – "Preliminary results of Rooftop Rainwater Harvesting and shallow well infiltration pilot project in the Danube-Tisza Interfluve, Hungary"
  • Sikandar Hayat: oral presentation – "Site suitability mapping for ‘Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR)’ implementation in Poralai and Hangol, the coastal basins of Baluchistan, Pakistan"

Check out the conference website for recorded presentations and posters.
