Irrigation: groundwater or surface water?

Globally about 70% of the water is utilized for irrigation by agriculture. Are you aware that whether the surface water or the groundwater is the source, they interact with one another and the consequences must be taken into account? (Essaid & Caldwell, 2017)

Using surface water causes higher groundwater level and intense groundwater input into streams, while the irrigation from groundwater reduces its level and its access to the streams. All of these correlations affect the efficiency of irrigation and the quality of water.
